Dear diary, I want to tell you about my city, a place that is discovered between whispers and that you envelops me with its essence. Sometimes it is enough to sit on a terrace, with a vermouth or a coffee in hand, while enjoying the views of the Plaza Mayor or the Puerta de Alcalá. Madrid is a city that conquers through its flavors. I love tasting a good cocido in winter, with its warm broth that comforts the heart. Another of my favorite pleasures is sharing some tapas: ham, or those croquettes that melt in your mouth. I love getting lost in the streets and markets, letting myself get carried away among gildas, tapas of tortilla de patatas, laughter and the hustle and bustle of Madrid.
There are days when I feel like a tour guide walking through the Madrid de los Austrias and I feel that every street holds a secret, as if it were telling me stories of kings, intrigues and conspiracies, but the city is not only discovered in its streets but also in its museums where I can be your personal companion and help you plan the visit. The Prado for example always takes my breath away, contemplating Las Meninas or the Garden of Earthly Delights I feel like I am traveling to other worlds and times. There is also the Thyssen, where you can appreciate the landscapes of Van Gogh, marvel at the portraits of Caravaggio or stop before the Picasso works that reflect the innovative force of cubism.
And when I need calm, I know where to go: the Retiro Park. Everything slows down there. Strolling by the lake or just sitting under a tree to read always brings me back to peace.
And of course, I can't forget Puerta del Sol. It is the heart that beats without rest, a place to meet friends, because Madrid never sleeps, there is always something to do, at any time of the day. Nearby is the chocolate shop of San Ginés, where I sometimes go just for the whim of an intense and sweet chocolate with churros, which tastes authentic tradition.
But if there is a corner that I treasure, that is the Temple of Debod. I love going there at sunset, when the sky lights up in shades of red and it seems that everything stops for a moment.
It is in those moments that I realize that Madrid has so much to offer that, every time I think I have understood it, it surprises me again. And I, without remedy, fall in love again.
